The federal government of Germany is providing five million euros for victims after the severe earthquake in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, a Taliban delegation visited the affected region, where hope for survivors is dwindling.
Following the series of severe earthquakes in western Afghanistan, the federal government has announced additional aid funds amounting to five million euros. “The reports from Afghanistan are shocking,” said the Foreign Office on the online service X, formerly Twitter. “We won’t leave the survivors alone.” The UN and the EU had previously promised aid.
The money now provided by Berlin is intended to support the work of several UN organizations that provide emergency accommodation or care for the injured in Afghanistan through an aid fund managed by the UN.
According to UN estimates, at least 2,000 people were killed on Saturday in a magnitude 6.3 earthquake and several aftershocks in Herat province. On Monday, many volunteers helped rescue victims and provide care to homeless villagers. Many helpers also brought shovels with them to search for victims in destroyed villages. Two days after the disaster, however, there was less and less hope of finding survivors.
