A court in Pakistan has formally accused former Prime Minister Imran Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in a significant case. According to a report by Geo News Pakistan, Imran Khan and Qureshi were charged with “disclosing official government secrets” by a judge in Rawalpindi on Monday, October 23rd.
The report stated, “This marks another setback for the former Prime Minister, who is presently incarcerated in a prison near Islamabad.”
Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi are facing charges under the Official Secrets Act of 1923 of Pakistan.
Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, was apprehended by the police on August 5th after he was sentenced to three years in prison by the Supreme Court of Islamabad for accepting gifts from foreign countries.
However, the Supreme Court of Islamabad suspended the three-year prison sentence for Imran Khan on August 29 this year and ordered his release on bail. Nevertheless, Pakistani authorities prevented his release, stating that he would remain in custody due to the case involving the disclosure of classified documents.
In this case, he is accused of divulging classified information sent by Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States for political gain and in violation of the country’s Official Secrets Act.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a close aide to Khan and former Foreign Minister of Pakistan, has also been detained on charges of involvement in this case.
Imran Khan has long asserted that this conversation serves as evidence of what he alleges is the outcome of U.S. interference in his country’s politics, purportedly leading to a vote of no confidence against him.
